Spring for Spring

Diane Pollack

As your Stylist, I always like to provide you with the update for the season so that you can see what is current and make the best choices that work for you.  My coined term is that “Trends are suggestions and not mandates.”

This season I felt a little less inspired by trends (although I do have a few goodies to share) and more about what I am suggesting to my customers as key items. You will get a good mix in here.

I started out by looking at what I had written you for Fall. And I can clearly confirm that my top trends for Fall are continuing. Something like the white tank, which was a surprising Fall suggestion, is a clear winner for the upcoming season. The shapes I talk about for denim/pants and the shoes and the accessories are still spot on, but of course in more seasonal fabrics, etc. So definitely go ahead and refresh your memory of the FALL CHEAT SHEET.

I also went back to last year for my Spring suggestions and thought that they were still very valid too. So check out BRIGHT IDEAS & MORE.

This is very good news! It means two things.

1) You can feel like the items you purchased last Spring and Fall still look fresh and updated.

2) If they felt too trendy for you in the past seasons, perhaps after seeing them for a while, you are ready to give them a try yourself.

And this leads me to another favorite piece that I wrote WHY TRENDS ARE LIKE iPhones. (Note that this piece was written years ago and that the iPhone model numbers mentioned were the most current at that time).

So now you want to know what is new…. Here is some new inspo on what is hot for Spring 23.

Let’s start with some of the key items I am recommending to my customers.

1)     A white button-up shirting. This is such a versatile piece. It can be worn by itself or under a blazer, vest, or sweater.  It can be worn fully tucked in, half tucked, French tucked, untucked, knotted at the waist, or as a shirt jacket. I like the last two with a little white tank/cami underneath.

 2)     Similarly, a chambray or denim shirt is also a casual versatile piece.

 3)     Hot off the press for Spring is the longer denim skirt: midi or maxi length. Because it is denim it is really versatile. The main difference in styling would be proportions. You will want to wear something on the shorter side or tucked in.

4)     We have seen jumpsuits for a while now. I love lightweight denim or neutral utility styles. as an easy one-and-done that can be worn back to sneakers or sandals. I always like to add a little white tank or cami underneath for an effortlessly styled look.

5)     Another great newbie for Spring is the Ballet flat. When I told a friend, she replied that she has been wearing ballet flats for years and didn’t know that they had gone out of style. They are an item that never truly goes out of style. But ever since one of the big designers sent them down the runway, they have been revived as a new trend. This means that you will see many more options in the stores and the fashionistas will e sporting them. So what you have worn in the past as a cute and functional item is now a fresh and updated trend.

The denim skirt speaks to the overall trend of Western influence. Also included are denim jackets, chambray shirts, western boots, and even the bandana.

The ballet flat fits in with the overall trend of Preppy. Remember we had the sweater vest and updated loafers come back? New versions of twinsets have shown up and Preppyy is getting a fun twist and is a bit more playful with fresh colors and some items with a side of kitsch.

So we have had quite a few seasons with pink as the main color. Red is now hot!

New, but never truly goes out of style is the polka dot pattern.

And if you want to go a bit bolder in your style, try metallic silver jeans.

Bodycon and cutout are also still strong. You may say that you are too old for that or that you don’t want to show off certain areas. Luckily you can still get that trend. Try a bodycon style with draping across the midsection, which is extremely flattering. And if you don’t want that area exposed with cutouts, keyholes at the neck and shoulders can be a sophisticated and sexy alternative.

So that is a wrap on my suggestions this season. Have fun with your style and if you need a little help let me know.
