Which Watch Makes You Tick?

Diane Pollack

Recently my husband decided that he wanted to buy himself a new luxury watch to celebrate some major wins at work. He had a few nice watches that were gifted to him, but at Fifty this would feel like a real benchmark to purchase and own himself. I agreed with him. If he wanted it, he earned it.

He had his thoughts set on a Rolex. Now no judgment to Rolex, it is the “Harvard of” watches, but personally, I do not think they have the most beautiful designs. To me, design is more important than name or status.

Alex and I went to research some of the top brands of watches at luxury stores. Fortunately, the Rolex he wanted was not in stock. This gave him time to think about his desires. He expressed to me that it was a bit irrational to spend all that money on a watch when there are plenty of better things he can be putting his money towards.

About two weeks later he saw a more affordable luxury watch that he tried on and liked. We left the store and a few days later he was still thinking about this watch. This is always a key sign to me that I really love and want something. He looked it up online and found a distributor selling the watch at an even better price than the original retailer. He went ahead and ordered it.

The watch came in, it looked beautiful, but on the side of the box it said: “made in China”. What? This was supposed to be a Swiss-made brand. Was it a very good knock-off?...

So, then the question became if he loved the design of the watch, would he be OK wearing a beautiful knock-off? He had been looking forward to the entire ceremonial unboxing of this luxury item and it was ruined.

He asked for my advice and it was challenging to respond because I believe the right watch for him would be the one that made him feel the best (Stylempower) and I could not decide for him.

I compared the unboxing to the lavish wedding that many of us want, although it doesn’t seem rational to spend all that money on one day of your life. My question was, would he be happy in the marriage? By that, I mean owning the watch, if it were a knock-off but he still liked it.

Fortunately, after doing some online research, it was the box, not the watch that was made in China. He felt confident that the watch was real and he decided to keep it. It’s now been about two weeks and I catch him glancing admirably at the watch with a huge smile. He LOVES the watch and it makes him happy!

Now to my point. There are three types of people.

1)     The ones who love luxury. They love a designer name and/or knowing that they have quality pieces.

2)     Those who like the idea of luxury but don’t want to pay the price. This is usually more about logos and the presumed look of status.

3)     Those who prefer design over luxury. This often includes a more unique design that doesn’t try to resemble a specific brand.

So, I ask you which one are you? This is what is going to help make the decision about things that you own and love. And when you take a look at them, they will make you smile. STYLEMPOWER!
