Bright Ideas and More

Diane Pollack

I recently read a blog that referenced the seasons in New York. I thought it was pretty accurate and funny.

*NEW YORK HAS 12 SEASONS
Winter
Fool’s Spring
Second Winter
Spring of Deception
Third Winter
The Pollening
Actual Spring
Summer
Hell’s Front Porch
False Fall
Second Summer
Actual Fall

And so, every year I struggle with when to present my Spring and Fall trend issues. So here we are again with the flip-flopping weather when we are all ready for actual Spring.

If you have been reading the Stylempower Insider News for some time, you also know that I always start my trend notes by my coined quote “Trends are suggestions and not mandates”. They are simply to put you in the know, so that you can decide what works best for you.

I am happy to report personally, unlike a year ago, with my newsletter entitled “WHAT I AM NOT WEARING FOR SPRING”, there are a few trends I am very excited about this year. Do note that many of the trends from last Spring, that I was not a fan of, are still going strong. But you may have totally other opinions and preferences.

1) Brights – All kinds of brights. My two favorites, Orange and Fuchsia, with some other fun and bold colors such as Turquoise and bright Apple Green. And what makes these colors new and fresh is not only will you find them in casuals and knits, they also make for a polished and fun update for suiting.

2) Romance feels both vintage and modern. Florals, Peter Pan collars, corsetry and lace. And of course, the continuation of all the puff sleeves.

3) Sexy is so in. This includes, miniskirts, bodycon styles and cutouts all over. Now I know that many of my readers are not into the overt sexiness of many of these looks and that is perfectly OK. I do want to point out that there are modified versions which I am a big fan of. Although you may not want your whole sides and back cut out, an asymmetrical keyhole, a cold shoulder or one shoulder can work on anyone and looks subtly sexy.

4)  Low Rise – Many of you know that despite other stylists hailing the high-rise, this is a category I could not get on board with. I kept hearing how flattering it was and how it makes you look taller and thinner. This Five-foot one gal is here to say, it did not do that for me. I love the elongated torso look of the lower rise. Who wants their boob sitting so close to their waist?

5)  Then there is a flashback to classic preppy. sweater vests, polo collars and collegiate looks.

6)  We continue to see crafty, artisanal, global and folklore looks which include patchworks, embroidery, crochet , fringe, hand crafted and appliques.

7)  Suiting is also transforming. slouchy pants often with a lower rise and bold jackets many with shoulder pads. Jackets are mostly oversized and there is also a resurgence of cropped jackets.

Some fun shoes include Gladiator sandals, Fisherman sandals, toe loop sandals, and sculptural and platform heels.

These are to name a few trends that are new and continuing for Spring and Summer this year. There is a ton more out there to explore.

If you are totally confused and overwhelmed, feeling clutter or disorganized or just short on time, I am here to help. Please reach out and enjoy feeling empowered for the new season.
