Mixed Messages

Diane Pollack

I recently heard an interview with Lady Gaga. She spoke about the power of makeup and how it helps transform her into the superwoman that she is. And she is!

Fashion has the same power to inspire you with the confidence to kill it in everything that you do.

My clients come to me so that I can help them harness this superpower. Many of my clients have concerns about their weight and what flatters them. I have many tips and guidelines to help them choose the best outfits that are flattering to their body types.

But here is where the mixed message comes in. Society is finally moving in the direction of inclusivity. We realize that not everyone looks like the models on the magazines, we SHOULD love who we are, no matter what we look like.

Fortunately, magazines and other media are starting to present women of different sizes, shapes, and colors. But we still have a long way to go.

In the meantime, many women come to me and ask for help for looks that will flatter them. It is my job to meet them where they are and help them feel the best that they can in their wardrobe.

Hopefully one day my job will transform from focusing on flattering my clients to solely focusing on their achieving personal style goals.

One of the people that is helping to change the conversation is Erica Mather, author of YOUR BODY, YOUR BEST FRIEND.

Erica and I presented a webinar where we had a frank conversation entitled Finding your confidence post-pandemic. A conversation about style empowerment and body positivity.

9 Tips to Flatter your Figure

1) Colorblock and vertical panels will break up large areas, making them look smaller. You can also use, scarves, necklaces, cardigans or blazers to break up large expanses of fabric

2) Flared/bootleg pants will balance out wide hips (trending NOW!)

3) Shoes that match pants, are skin colored, low-cut toes, or cutout sides, will elongate legs

4) Wrap dresses, loose, untucked, drapey tops will all help to hide a tummy

5) Long torso - wear empire or cropped jacket

Short torso - wear drop waist or tunic

6) If you are petite, proportion is important. Don't wear too much fabric that will overwhelm you

7)  Tight rule: Tight top wear loose bottom, tight bottom wear loose top

8) Small chest = higher neckline like crewneck

Larger chest = lower neckline like V-neck & scoop neck

Boatneck is good for narrow shoulders and wide hips

9) Do not wear lengths that hit at the largest part of your body. For instance, skirts and cropped pants should not hit at the most muscular part of your calf. Follow similar guidelines for your thighs and arms.
