The Two Biggest Issues My Client's are Facing Post Covid.

Diane Pollack

As we get back into the swing of normal life again, I have two consistent issues I am hearing from clients.

Shall we discuss?

I gained so much weight during Covid, nothing fits. What do I wear?

Well Covid or other reasons, here is my advice on what to wear so that you can feel fabulous and empowered while you are trying to lose weight.

Accessories are generally a one-size-fits-all. You can invest here in shoes or bags or have some fun with inexpensive trendy jewelry. Whatever your style and budget, this is the way to go, and these accessories can totally transform an outfit.

If you really can't fit into anything, get a few basic pieces that you can accessorize in multiple ways to look like new outfits. For instance, the little black dress for day can be worn one day with a scarf, belt, and great shoes. On another day, perhaps you have a cardigan or blazer and a whole different style shoe for a whole different look.

Some key pointers here.

a) Wrap dresses or tops are generally more adjustable and flexible with sizing, so a good option as you continue to lose weight.

b) Knits have inherent stretch and are more flexible with sizing, even if the wovens have stretch in it. Therefore knits are a better option for changing sizes but beware of too much clinginess.

c) Choose items to draw attention to where you would like to focus. If it's your face, a great short necklace, scarf or fresh lipstick will do the trick. On the flip side, if your tummy is not what you want to spotlight, stay away from belts.

d) For any of your "backdrop" clothing, as I like to call them, (as the accessories are the star), choose neutrals. No patterns. Colors will work, but they won't be as versatile and transformative if you want to wear them often, people are more likely to remember the fuchsia top even if you change the accessories.

I have been wearing leggings and joggers and can't bear the thought of wearing tight pants back to the office. Help!

You are in luck here. Designers are aware of this and there is are some new style trends that help solve this issue.

a) The hybrid pant. This is the combination of traditional trousers and a jogger. There are many versions of designs out there, but the basics are as follows. The waistbands are not as constricted with buttons and zippers, they are more likely to be elastic and or drawstring or ties. Often they have trouser details like pockets and perhaps a crease in the leg. The leg shape is generally fuller and the fabrics are polished and career-focused but have lots of stretch in them.

b) The knit set. This is around now and will be more common when you go back to the office in the fall, as many are heavier sweater weights. A tank and short set are rampant for Summer, although generally not office appropriate. The office-appropriate tops can range from short sleeves, long sleeves, or an update on the old twin-set. The bottoms can be a jogger style (also usually not for the office unless it is really casual). A pajama-style pant in a rich knit, with the right accessories can look really elevated. The other option is knit skirts, which are generally pencil and can vary in length from short to knee, to midi to maxi. I am seeing midi as a very common option.

Well I hope this has helped as your fix for your Covid Transition style. Reach out to me for any questions, help or whatever you might need to feel empowered in our old/new world.
