What I consider to be the great piece of your summer wardrobe.

Diane Pollack

As those of you who know me know, one term I can not stand is “must-have”. I think we are all individuals and what is a must-have for one, whether it be for style reasons or other, is not a “must-have” for others.

However, recently I decided that there is a great piece (for which there are many variations and styles) that I would say is a great key item in most women’s wardrobes. You might not even know that it can help your outfit to look a little more updated.

This is something I often utilize in my wardrobe. While doing a virtual appointment recently, I became even more aware of its versatility and modern update to refresh her wardrobe (and possibly yours too).

It is simply the white top. This white top can take many variations so that it is not limited to one personal style. And I believe it is great to own in multiple variations: tank tops, tee shirts, button-downs, blouses, etc..

Recently while shopping, I found myself grabbing a ton of updated white tops in different variations. Now also remember that just because the color works, doesn’t mean you can then assume it works with everything. This is why I recommend having variations in your wardrobe.

For instance, one of your bottoms may require a longer or shorter top and another may require a fitted or more full top. So I believe that the great white top is your summer workhorse.

Let me explain to you why I feel it is such a key piece in your wardrobe. Let’s start simply. It easily pairs with black or white bottoms for a clean fresh look. I am sure you know that.

Now if you have a random bright colored bottom, red, orange, turquoise, etc. it is a nice clean compliment. But actually, none of this is really the reason I am writing this article for you.

Let’s go back to my client. She had pulled out a bunch of patterned skirts from her closet. One was a red, brown, and blue print. I can’t remember if it had white in it. I asked her what she wore with it and she pulled out a brown top.

Her outfit combination would have been a perfect example on my Fine 2 Fab page. No one would have pointed out this outfit and exclaimed “ I can’t believe she is wearing that”.

But she was coming to me to look fresh and updated and this outfit certainly wasn’t doing that. (Read my quote below to find out why).

So what did I suggest she wear with it instead? You guessed it a white top. And remember, I don’t remember if the skirt had white in it or not. It doesn’t matter, I still think it is the freshest most updated choice.

I have previously written a blog called “Does White Go with Everything? and when we are talking about your summer wardrobe, I would pretty much say “yes”. I will quote myself here from the blog as I think I said it really well then.

“I have this fun colorful skirt pictured above. What would you wear with it?

You don't want to wear any of these bright colors back to it. First, they would be very difficult to match. Even if you could, it would look too matchy-matchy and probably garish. Black with it, to my point, is too heavy looking.  Here is where a nice white top is a great neutral.”

Now here is the downside. Regarding my white tanks and tees. They tend to get dingy over wearing with multiple uses. and they do need to be replaced. So for tanks and tees, you may not want to invest in expensive versions.

So with approximately one month of summer left, you may want to hit the sales on those white tops.

And as always, I am here to help. Ready for that Virtual closet review? Need some great white shirts? Just let me know.
