Red Hot!

Diane Pollack

It’s that time of year again! One of my readers, (Hi Jamie) told me that her favorite issues of Insider News were the trends of the season. So here you have it.

As always, I have to say that “trends are suggestions and not mandates”. I am here to inform and then you make the call on what works for you.

So trends go in cycles and some last longer than others. That means that there will be some items listed here that are continuing from the Spring or Fall of last year. This is great news because no one wants to spend money on a one-hit wonder. Am I right?

What is also interesting is that some classic pieces that are timeless can also become trendy. We saw that with Ballet Flats and Loafers. And speaking of Loafers, you can read an article that yours truly was quoted in, on how they are trendy and how new variations of styles and styling have given them a fresh update.

I think one of the newest trends this season is the Vest. We have seen sweater vests recently, and they are still around, but currently, the traditional menswear woven styles are hot. If you are more traditional you can wear them as a layering piece and for a style update, they are being worn solo.

The Peplum is back and this is a cute style that is also flattering and can hide your pouch. Corset styles continue. Remember these don’t have to be overtly sexy and are very wearable like seaming details in a sweater.

In skirts, the newest is the full Circle Skirt, think 50’s style. However, it looks very new paired with modern pieces like tanks, graphic tees, a basic sweater, and moto jackets. You will also continue to see Minis, A-line, and Pencil Skirts. Which honestly don’t feel that new or crazy trendy. So you can be on-trend and feel confident that these styles have legs (get the pun? LOL).

Other items that continue are Wide Pants in both jeans and trousers and Baggy Cargos.

Knit Dressing, like sweater dresses and matching sets continues; which is great for comfort while still looking effortlessly put together.

Column Dresses are new and very flattering as they will elongate your body.

For coats, you will see Pea Coats, Bombers, Trenches, Faux fur & Shearlings, Duvet coats you just want to wrap yourself in and the Puffers continues. Long-line Maxi coats look fresh.

For shoes, the Moto Boot is new. The Second-skin Boot (which looks great with cropped flares) and Pointy Toes are trending. Kitten Heels are big, which is great when you want the dressiness of a heel and also want some comfort.

In fabrications, Sheers and Velvets are big. And Leather and Faux Leather have become staples and will continue to continue.

Key callouts to Tailoring, Defined Waistlines, and Strong Shoulders. Can we say, “Hello 80’s power suit?”

In Bags, Oversized continues for that “capacious” look. The Top Handles are feminine and retro. And Soft Clutches are everywhere.

In accessories, Chunky Earrings are big. Belts are back, both as an added accessory to a dress or skirt that might not have had them, and also making those belt loops on trousers and jeans useful again. STYLIST TIP – Any garment that comes with a self-fabric belt will instantly look more styled if you swap it out for a belt of your own.

Rosettes are blooming everywhere, both included on the garment and as individual accessories.

And so I don’t forget, the meaning of the title of this Insider News, Red is the hottest color of the season. Trendy and oh-so classic!
