New Beginnings
Diane Pollack
It has been a while. If you were wondering why you hadn't heard from me, it is because I was very busy moving. Although I only moved within my building, this was major for me, as I lived in my apartment for my entire adult life.
Being the queen of closet rejuvenation, this was my time to clear out after many, many years.
Since I am generally good about regularly bringing small bags over to my local thrift shop, I am happy to say, there was very little for me to get rid of in my wardrobe.
My husband, on the other hand, had 5 garbage bags full of clothes. His suits were needed and appreciated by those who can’t afford them. The other bags included T-shirts, boxers, and socks, which were all perfectly good, but not anything the thrift shop would want.
I know a woman who is involved with giving items directly to the homeless. And so I made numerous trips with a rolling suitcase to donate these items. And I felt really good about it.
We had an extra computer that we gave to a friend in need. Easy and another feel-good moment.
I had a pair of designer jeans from high school that I was holding on to. Like many of my clients, this was a sentimental item. But this move forced me to think, who and what, after all these years, was I holding on to them for? Fortunately, I have a friend whose teenage daughter was thrilled to get them. Again, this made me feel good.
Along similar lines, there were some items that if I had a daughter myself, I might have passed them on to. Since I don't, I had to think about what to do with them. I had some jewelry from my childhood, which I gave to my friend's daughters. I also had my High School jacket. I was fortunate to have a high school friend whose daughter is currently attending our alma mater.
Speaking of alma maters, I found a book that I received at a college reunion, which was nice for a while, but not as meaningful as a yearbook (which I would NEVER suggest that you get rid of). So I gave it to a friend who did not attend the reunion.
It is important to note that these items were not cluttering up my go-to closet. The jeans were up in a box on the shelf and not with my daily wear jeans. And the High School jacket was at my parents’ place. The jewelry was also tucked away and not with the jewelry that I currently wear.
As you know, I am all about clearing the clutter in your wardrobe. But, it really took a move and many, many years to think about some things, and if I really need them at this point in my life. So my challenge to you is to do the same. Go beyond your day-to-day clothes and think about if you really need these items and how they can best be utilized and appreciated.
If you still plan to hold on to them, please make sure they are in a place that is not cluttering up your day-to-day items.
I would love to hear how it goes. Shoot me a note and let me know. And remember, I am always here to help.
